Bacterial Variation

چکیده
The ability of a bacterial culture to manifest more than one set of culture characters is now recognized as a general phenomenon. Since the pioneer studies of Stryker,2" Baerthlein,3 Arkwright,2 and de Kruif6 two or more rather stable culture complexes, which, however, are capable of intertransition in a seemingly orderly manner under certain circumstances, have been described as occurring in many bacterial species. The more commonly observed of these complexes have been designated by the term "culture phase," and the transformation of one phase into another is referred to as "phasic variation" or "bacterial dissociation." The reader is referred to Hadley' 10 for general reviews. The variation pattern of Klebsiella pneumoniae has been the subject of considerable study, as the result of which it is now considered that the phase pattern of this species is composed of at least three culture character complexes.' 6,14,16,17,18 Since these complexes seem analogous to the M (mucoid), S (smooth), and R (rough) culture phases of the pneumococcus,5 these designations have been applied to the corresponding pneumobacillus variants. The variation trend of the pneumobacillus, like that of the pneumococcus, is usually from M to S to R. Transition from the M to the S phase is indicated by a change from the opaque mucoid colony type to the translucent "coli-like" smooth colony type and by the loss of a number of culture characters induding encapsulation, type specificity, the ability to stimulate the production of typespecific antibodies, specific polysaccharide production, and virulence. The S to R phase transformation is indicated by a further change in

Determining Difference in Evolutionary Variation of Bacterial RecA proteins vs 16SrRNA Genes by using 16s_Toxonomy Tree
Background and Aims: The rate of variation in various genes of a bacterial species is different during evolution. Therefore, in systematic bacterial studies many researchers compare the phylogenetic tree of a particular gene to the standard tree of an rRNA gene. Regarding the importance of 16SrRNA gene and the evolutional process of RecA protein family, we investigated the changes in the select...
متن کاملGenetic variation among Escherichia coli isolates from human and calves by using RAPD PCR
Background: Various strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) are known as major causes of intestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans and various animal species. Molecular methods are important for the identification of bacterial isolates and nucleotide sequence variations, as well as information on tracking bacterial agents related to the outbreaks, the frequency of the bacterial genetic ...
متن کاملAlgal-bacterial co-variation in streams: A cross-stream comparison
Algal-bacterial co-variation has been frequently observed in lentic and marine environments, but the existence of such relationships in lotic ecosystems is not well established. To examine possible co-variation, bacterial number and chlorophyll-a concentration in water and sediments of nine streams from different regions in the USA were examined. In the water, a strong relationship was found be...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal variability of bacterial communities within a combined sewer system
This study describes the temporal and spatial variability of bacterial communities within a combined sewer system in England. Sampling was conducted over 9 months in a sewer system with intensive monitoring of hydraulic conditions. The bacterial communities were characterized by 16S rRNA gene-targeted terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. These data were related to the hyd...
متن کاملTree phyllosphere bacterial communities: exploring the magnitude of intra- and inter-individual variation among host species
BACKGROUND The diversity and composition of the microbial community of tree leaves (the phyllosphere) varies among trees and host species and along spatial, temporal, and environmental gradients. Phyllosphere community variation within the canopy of an individual tree exists but the importance of this variation relative to among-tree and among-species variation is poorly understood. Sampling te...
متن کاملGene Loss Dominates As a Source of Genetic Variation within Clonal Pathogenic Bacterial Species
Some of the most dangerous pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Yersinia pestis evolve clonally. This means that little or no recombination occurs between strains belonging to these species. Paradoxically, although different members of these species show extreme sequence similarity of orthologous genes, some show considerable intraspecies phenotypic variation, the source of which re...
